This week, the Appropriations Committee will be hearing from citizens around the state regarding the supplemental budget as proposed by the Governor. The Maine State Legislature is tasked with finding $483 million in savings to the budget it passed last June 2009. The budget in June also included millions of dollars of cuts, bringing the total cuts to nearly $1 billion of about a$6.3 billion budget.
The Governor has repeatedly announced that tax increases are off the table meaning nearly all of the revenue shortfall must be met through budget cuts. Folks from around the state argued that all options must be on the table, including revenue generation and tax increases.
